Poll 2021: DJ Snake

DJ Snake
From: France

As slippery and elusive as his namesake when it comes to answering questions, DJ Snake’s past twelve months loom large through the simulacrum of social media. Filmed kung-fu fighting in front of a private jet, the Parisian DJ and producer, christened William Sami Étienne Grigahcine, had plenty of reason to be in an ebullient mood.
He produced ‘Selfish Love’ for actor and singer Selena Gomez, turning out reggaeton and acoustic versions for maximum impact — then adding a Tiësto remix just to make sure. Teaming up with Rick Ross and Rich Brian on ‘Run It’, he channelled Ed Banger, trap and Hans Zimmer into a track so epic and beefy it could only be the soundtrack to a Marvel film, martial arts epic Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. ‘You Are My High’ featured a sunny, filtered soul vocal transposing over a bouncing hip-hop beat, and ‘Ring The Alarm’ went balls to the wall with a future house club banger.
Taking merch to its apex, he also released a branded DJ Snake Hublot watch — yours for a cool £21k.

Poll 2020: DJ Snake

DJ Snake
DJ Snake’s innate ability to deliver huge collaborations — with his contacts list including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Cardi B, Gucci Mane, Young Thug, Diplo, Aluna George, Offset, and 21 Savage — and shut down multi-thousand capacity arenas have been largely stoppered due to the impact of COVID-19. Fortunately, Instagram has demonstrated that his impeccable dress sense remains on point.
DJ Snake has dropped two pieces of new music in 2020. Trap cut ‘Trust Nobody’ landed in June, and has amassed over 1.5m plays on YouTube at the time of writing, and a blistering Audrey Nuna remix, called ‘Damn Right Pt. 2’, which followed in October. Real name William Sami Étienne Grigahcine, his beloved Paris St. Germain nearly went all the way in the Champions League in 2020, eventually shut out by Bayern Munich in the final in August. Fans must be hoping he’s been busy in the studio through lockdown, ready to turn the world’s biggest stages back into a zoo again, once it’s safe to do so.

Poll 2019: DJ Snake

DJ Snake

The career of DJ Snake, real name William Sami Étienne Grigahcine, was launched off the back of the international success of his massive ‘Turn Down For What’ featuring Lil Jon back in 2013.

The big news for Parisian Monsieur Grigahcine in 2019 was the release of his second studio album, the 17-track ‘Carte Blanche’, a star-studded affair with appearances from, amongst others, Sean Paul, Majid Jordan, Zomboy, Ozuna, ZHU, Offset and Cardi B. Drawing upon a range of electronic music influences from house, bass, dancehall, tropical and dubstep, ‘Carte Blanche’’s songs range from underground/club tracks to more pop-orientated material. Big singles from the album this year included the killer collabs between Snake, J.Balvin and Tyga ‘Loco Contigo’, and ‘Enzo’ with Sheck Wes, featuring Offset, 21 Savage and Gucci Mane.

In a very creative year for him, aside from festival gigs including Coachella, Ultra, Spring Awakening, Parookaville, Exit, various Tomorrowlands, and DJ gigs from Shanghai to Bogotá, DJ Snake has even found the time to collaborate with sportswear company Mizuno to design a pair of African savannah-themed trainers.
